چکیده
KALINA J. 2014: Gregor Mendel, his experiments and their statistical evaluation. Acta Musei Moraviae, Scientiae biologicae (Brno) 99(1): 8799. Gregor Mendel (18221884) is now generally acknowledged as the founder of modern genetics. He was among the first to make systematic use of mathematical methods in biology, employing just the simpler rules of probability theory to work out some of the underlying laws of heredity. However, it is less well known that an element of controversy began to attach to his experimental results in the 1930s, largely as a result of the work of the eminent British statistician and biologist R.A. Fisher, who felt that Mendels results were too close to expected values. New explanations have therefore been sought to avert suspicion that the figures may have been in some way idealised. The work in hand seeks to contribute to resolving the Mendel-Fisher controversy. An alternative statistical model for the design of Mendels experiments is suggested, which appears to correspond to Mendels results. At the same time, the proposed model allows a very simple interpretation.

"Experiments in Plant Hybridization" (1866), by Johann Gregor Mendel
During the mid-nineteenth century, Johann Gregor Mendel experimented with pea plants to develop a theory of inheritance. In 1843, while a monk in the Augustian St Thomas?s Abbey in Brünn, Austria, now Brno, Czech Repubic, Mendel examined the physical appearance of the abbey?s pea plants ( Pisum sativum [4]) and noted inconsistencies between what he saw and what the blending theory of inheritanc...

Gregor Mendel's classic paper, Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden (Experiments on Plant Hybrids), was published in 1866, hence 2016 is its sesquicentennial. Mendel completed his experiments in 1863 and shortly thereafter began compiling the results and writing his paper, which he presented in meetings of the Natural Science Society in Brünn in February and March of 1865. Mendel owned a personal co...
متن کاملGregor Mendel, OSA (1822-1884), founder of scientific genetics.
Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian monk and part-time school teacher, undertook a series of brilliant hybridisation experiments with garden peas between 1857 and 1864 in the monastery gardens and, using statistical methods for the first time in biology, established the laws of heredity, thereby establishing the discipline of genetics.
متن کاملGoings on in Mendel’s Garden
Gregor Mendel gave us the tools by which to do modern genetics, and we have a century of progress to show for it. We properly credit Mendel and his peas for showing us the particulate nature of inheritance, but his work both enabled and disabled evolutionary thinking for several decades after its rediscovery. Since the factors he studied didn’t change over generations, Mendel’s discoveries solv...
متن کاملMendel, Mechanism, Models, Marketing, and More
This year marks the 150(th) anniversary of the presentation by Gregor Mendel of his studies of plant hybridization to the Brunn Natural History Society. Their nature and meaning have been discussed many times. However, on this occasion, we reflect on the scientific enterprise and the perception of new discoveries.
